Redefining Race

MILWAUKEE — A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an “Aunt Jemima” and saying she isn’t competent to be secretary of state.

The host, who is white, also called Colin Powell an “Uncle Tom.”

He added that he has a long history of commitment to civil rights and support of the black community.

Aunt Jemima

Best of the Web has an excellent analysis, not of this particular incident, but of the paradox it encapsulates: How can someone who claims to support advancement and opportunity for blacks not be pleased about a black woman being named to replace a black man in the nation’s most significant cabinet post?

Answer: Because the black man and woman do not hold to a liberal ideology, i.e., they are not “really black” because they “don’t think like black people.”

Notice that race is redefined so that it has nothing to do with race . . .

I think that the white Liberal has become so brow-beaten with racial guilt, (and erroneously believe that other whites have been, as well) that they feel they must be the first to criticize a successful black that doesn’t excoriate whites to show how un-racist they are.

I feel that this is indicative of some type of psychological issue – or perhaps a form of ‘noblesse oblige’ racism that I find more troubling than something more overt.
