Americans are Mathematically Illiterate

Boy doing math problems

If anyone ever told you there’s no reason to learn math in school, they are absolutely right!

Americans are so mathematically illiterate that you’re better off learning to speak Klingon if you want anyone to understand you.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve walked through a mathematical demonstration of some concept and gotten back a reply like “Well I don’t see any reason why . . .” or “Let’s have a meeting to discuss that.”

God, it’s painful.

If you’re still in school, don’t bother learning any more math than you absolutely have to. It’ll just come back to haunt you.

    Hostile Witness-

The lesson to learn here is not to let math get in the way of achieving a goal. Use it to your advantage, not to your disadvantage. Don’t kill the goal on the drawing board by insisting on making it a complex math problem that no one wants to or has time to understand. You risk undermining the end goal unless that goal is to make your peers realize the high level of your knowledge of mathematics.

    Hi MS –

That’s what they said to Galileo at the Inquisition. They may have substituted “science” for “math.”

    Choose your battles wisely, Galileo…

Consider Coronavirus. The numbers say that we have over 5 million people dead from it. Yet when you look at the death rates (of the world I might add), they have not changed. I don’t think it’s just America, it’s the entire world. Even doctor didn’t understand those simple concepts I just explained. WTF is going on here as my kids would say.

    Hi Chris –

COVID doesn’t seem to be good at killing young, healthy people. It’s good at killing people who are elderly and/or have co-morbidities, or in other words, people not unlikely to die within a year or so anyway. So the overall death rate doesn’t skyrocket. That’s just a theory, of course. You could make the same observation about life insurance premiums, which, counter-intuitively, have stayed pretty flat through the course of a pandemic.
