eBooks

I can’t get interested in eBooks. My books are my friends. I also like the smell of books. When I finish reading a book, if I liked it, I give it a new home with my other book friends. If I didn’t like it, I hurl it in the garbage. Can’t do that with an eBook . . . Read more →

Yes We Can!

KABUL – Roadside bombs — the biggest killer of U.S. soldiers — claimed eight more American lives Tuesday, driving the U.S. death toll to a record level for the third time in four months as President Barack Obama nears a decision on a new strategy for the troubled war. — October deadliest month for US in Afghan war – Yahoo! News We know what you’re thinking, but this is not Obama’s fault. Afghanistan is someone else’s mess, so why don’t you grab a mop? . . . After all, [Obama] has a busy schedule, what with golf games and pitching the International Olympic Committee and date nights and Democratic fund-raisers and health care and the U.N. Where’s Montoya?

Replying to colleague Chris Speilman’s inquiry regarding [Juan Pablo] Montoya’s absence from the top 5 rankings in NASCAR, [Bob] Griese promptly responded something along the lines of “he’s out getting a taco.” Now, you don’t need me to tell you how stupid that comment is – Montoya isn’t even Mexican – obviously as a Colombian, Montoya was probably out dealing cocaine. — Deadspin Read more →

Ty the Samoyed

This morning I was visiting my friend Ty the Samoyed. He lives across the street from me. He’s rambunctious and pushy but he’s only two years old so I give him some leeway. “I’m glad he’s still friends with Lightning,” his owner said. “He got in a fight with Bon Bon the golden retriever.” “Who fights with golden retrievers?” my owner said. “They’re the most peaceful dogs.” Ty told me he thought Bon Bon was up to something . . . — Lightning Read more →

Your Journey

Never compare your journey with someone else’s. It’s a marathon with no finish line. Someone else may start out faster than you, may seem to progress more quickly than you, but every runner has his own pace. Your journey is your journey, not a competition. — Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai Read more →

The Way to Get Rich

The way to get rich in this world is mainly by making people feel large hope about a small exertion (i.e. “six-second abs,” lottery tickets, voting in an election, maturity models, and stuff like that). If you want to get rich, do not tie yourself to the truth. — James Bach Read more →

Neuheisel!

Optimism is still full. It’s a full trough here at UCLA. One thing that will keep us from it happening is if we start to believe it’s not on the right track. Those of us in the trenches, I expect everyone to fall in line with that. But the leader of the ship has to tell you it’s gonna land. That’s all I know how to do. — Coach Rick Neuheisel Read more →

Wishful Thinking

Notre Dame really believed this was going to be the year they ended the losing streak to USC. The university had pre-authorized the tearing down of the goal posts if the Irish won . . . Read more →

Quote of the Week

[Balloon Boy’s dad Richard] Heene, 48, a storm chaser and inventor, has described himself as an amateur scientist, but [Larimer County Sheriff Jim] Alderden said Heene has only a high school education. “He may be nutty, but he’s not a professor,” Alderden said. — Colo. sheriff calls balloon saga a hoax – msnbc.com Read more →
