You Look Like an OAF

Dark glasses

A colleague shows up in the office today with dark glasses and a toothpick in his mouth.

“It’s my OAF look,” he explains.

“Is that an acronym or are you spelling the word ‘oaf'”?

Among the tragedies of a post-Vietnam professionalized military is that Generation Y veterans are more cliquish. With the end of military conscription during the last days of Vietnam, veterans have become a breed apart from the rest of society. Like concentrations of egregious wealth and great gaps in education, a them and us separation between veterans and the general populace does not bode well for the future of democratic-style governance.
