Pig in a Poke

10 Mar 2010 / PE

Pig-in-a-poke is an idiom that refers to a confidence trick originating in the Late Middle Ages, when meat was scarce but cats were not.

The scheme entailed the sale of a suckling pig in a poke (bag). The wriggling bag would actually contain a cat (not particularly prized as a source of meat) that was sold to the victim in an unopened bag.

A common colloquial expression in the English language, to buy a pig in a poke is to make a risky purchase without inspecting the item beforehand. The phrase can also be applied to accepting an idea or plan without a full understanding of its basis.

We Don’t Keep Our Money in Banks

Security fears dog online banking

Now that’s what I call lazy reporting. If they’d bothered to interview an actual dog, they would have found out that we don’t keep our money in banks because banks are run by Wall Street fat cats and we don’t trust Wall Street fat cats. Actually, we don’t trust any kind of cats.

There may be dogs online barking but there are no dogs online banking.

Dogs Are Smarter Than Cats

27 Nov 2009 / PE

My dad is of the opinion that cats are “smarter” than dogs. Not coincidentally, he and my mom own a couple of cats, one of which was sitting next to his chair at Thanksgiving dinner.

Dad decided to share some turkey with the cat. He stood up with a piece of turkey, showed it to the cat, than walked out to the kitchen and dropped it in the cat’s food dish. When he returned to his chair, the cat was still sitting there. Never moved.

“That is one stupid cat,” I said.

“Well, he’s three-quarters blind,” my dad said, although he didn’t say how he could possibly know that.

“If my dog was here, he would have jumped up and eaten your whole dinner the second you left the room.”

You can’t walk a puppy by just dragging him along like a pull-toy! Dogs have to be allowed to explore their surroundings! If you don’t understand that, get a f^$&ing cat!

Sorry about my language but I am suuuuuuuper irritated right now. I hope that dog gets to be a hundred pounds and drags you into a lake.

Buying Dog Food

26 Jul 2009 / PE

At Trader Joe’s, buying a bag of Holistic Natural Canine Formula, whatever that is. The dog seems to like it.

The checker asks me, “Do you want a bag for the cat food?”

I say, “Yes, but it’s actually dog food.”

“Oh sorry,” he says. “I saw ‘canine’ and I guess I thought ‘feline.’”

“There’s a picture of a dog right on the bag,” I say.

Cat People

Up movie poster

My wife and I saw Up yesterday at the Irvine Spectrum. The movie features a “talking” dog — a whole pack of talking dogs actually. When the main dog character meets the main human character, the dog jumps up, licks his face and says, “I have just met you and I love you.” If dogs could talk, that’s exactly what they’d say.

After the movie, we walked over to Spectrum Pets and looked at a puggle puppy. Same reaction — jumping, face licking. I have just met you and I love you.

Of course, there are some people who feel that they don’t deserve this kind of unconditional love. We call them “cat people.”

My Dog Sends a Bark Out to the Puppy Heroes

8 Dec 2008 / Lightning Epps
Lightning sleepy

A 3-year-old Virginia boy was rescued Saturday after spending the night in the woods with only his puppies to keep him warm. . . .

Around 300 people helped search for the missing child, and a command center was set up at the local Baptist church.

“God really protected the boy,” Grace Baptist Church Pastor Dave Kline said. “We are happy that we were able to help.”

God is “dog” spelled backwards! I say God could have saved everyone a lot of time by not letting the boy get lost in the first place.

Good thing he had his puppies to keep him warm!

Don’t try this with kittens!

P.S. That is a photo of me keeping my owner warm when I was a puppy.
